The Radicant / Site Analysis and Appropriations
After several meetings and discussions it became clear to us where the intersection between our competences and the LACAZ’ needs lay; at spatial management and furniture design. At first our focus was the development of a system to manage the spaces. Parallel to that we developed the idea of flexible furnitures, where flexible stands for easily mountable, combinable, and transformable. We kept the principle of having a graphical house style in the back of our minds. Further in the process both focusses merged into one single design of a base element: SQUARE. With this lego-like base element also other demands of the squat could be fulfilled, such as the acoustical insulation of the Salsa Room and the space separating element.
That’s where ‘square’ came in: a lego-like element which forms the base for a variety of different compositions. Where the moveable plates in the ‘square’ for the model give the opportunity to adjust it to several groups, activities, hours,... The moveable plates in the ‘square’ for the furniture have the same purpose of appropriation. Secondly they give an extra dimension of possibilities to the furniture. The moveable plates form the door of a closet, the shade of a lamp, the seat of a chair, etcetera. The name ‘square’ refers to the basic geometrical form we used to create the furniture and model, in combination with square as a place to meet and where several groups come together. In this way ‘square’ refers to the purpose of LACAZ.
